A list prepared by the Ash War Memorial committee reveals that Albert Budd was related to Mrs Green of Shawfields. We think Albert may have been Mrs Louisa Green's son and joined up using his mother's married name.
Albert Green
Albert Green enlisted with the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment for three years or the duration of the War on 23 August 1915, and gave his age as 19 years 8 months (SHC ref QRWS/1/3/3). Soldiers Died records: Albert Green, 12128 Machine Gun Corps, born in Guildford, enlisted in Guildford, formerly G/6433 West Surrey Regiment, residence Ash. The Army Register of Soldier’s Effects gives him as 5th Bn MGC, and that he was killed in action. His mother was his next of kin, and she was called Louisa. The 1881 census records Louisa Aston was living with her parents in barracks at Chelsea. Her father James was a private in the Grenadier Guards. The 1891 census records that Louisa Aston (born Pimlico c1869) was a servant in Churt. In 1895 Albert Fitzpatrick Aston’s birth was registered in the Guildford area. He was baptised 16 June 1895 at St John the Evangelist, Stoke next Guildford, and his mother was Louisa Aston, singlewoman, of London Road. Frank Green, milk purveyor of Drummond Road, married Louisa Aston of London Road at Stoke next Guildford on 7 February 1899. The 1901 census records that Frank, a dairyman, and Louisa were living in Guildford with two young sons. On 12 May 1905 Frank and Louisa’s children Gertrude May, Frederick and Louisa Daisy were baptised at St Peter’s Church Ash. On 19 May 1905 their eldest son Frank was baptised at St Peter’s Church Ash, and on 18 February 1910 their daughter Florence Lily was baptised at St Peter’s Church Ash. The 1911 census records that Frank, a gardener, and Louisa and their family lived at Vine Cottages in Shawfield Road, Ash. They had been married 12 years and had four children still living. Albert “Fitzpatrick” aged 16 was a farm labourer, and was described as “son” but not counted among their children, and was listed last. He was born in Merrow. Frank and Louisa Green appear on the electoral register for 1918 living in Vine Cottages in Shawfield Road. Perhaps Budd was Albert's father's surname. The Budd family was known to the Green family. In 1909 Frank and Louisa's sister in law Eliza, the widow of Allan Green, was married to Albert William Budd (born 1869) at St Andrew’s Church in Farnham.
